Face off by Kateryna Vitkovskata (below)

Face Off: Jesse, a blond man wearing a blend of sci-fi and fantasy armor attacks a woman with his sword, rage in his eyes. The long-red haired woman has scarred features and two swords, defending with confidence and curiousity.

Face Off - Commissioned by Kateryna Vitkovska

Red Demon:

On an isolated planet where unity is as engineered as its people, Jesse seeks the truth behind the slaughter of his family—starting with the immortal who spared him.

A century ago, two human lines nearly wiped each other out rather than acknowledge their shared humanity. But when Jesse's mining town is slaughtered under mysterious circumstances, it's clear ancient bigotries are still alive, and rebels have access to some magic or tech capable of wide-scale genocide.

The Red Demon bloodied her swords in that massacre-a bioengineered immortal left over from that century old war. Jesse expected to be upholding his empire's fragile peace, not killing her own. But Jesse is too optimistic and stubborn to break. Better days are coming-and he's willing to take on an immortal to protect the life he's rebuilt among the ashes.

Faruhar, the so-called Red Demon, is not the mastermind Jesse expects. Her fragmented mind is ravaged by guilt over crimes she cannot remember committing, and a code impressed on her by a few kind people she cannot forget.

A fast-paced science fantasy with tense fight scenes, a spicy romantic subplot, and a twisty plot that punches you in the feels. Fans of Pierce Brown’s Red Rising and R.F. Kuang’s Poppy War Trilogy will appreciate this book.

Themes and Tropes: Resilience, found family, mental health, redemption, enemies-to-lovers romance, queer-normative worldbuilding.

Content Warnings: Depictions of death (including children), graphic violence, one chapter of graphic gore, bioengineered animal death (they aren’t cute), profanity, graphic sexual content (M/F), off-page rape references, threats of sexual violence, and inappropriate physical contact.

Early Praise:

“I had the chance to work on this fast-paced science fantasy as a proofreader, and I was mesmerised by its richly realized setting and characters. I also may or may not have threatened Sill that I need more books set in this world.”
— Danai Christopoulou, Pushcart-nominated author and editor at Hugo-nominated khōréō

Amber-skied world:

My sci-fi thriller novella, Amber Skied World, will be released in Fall 2025 once I sort out Red Demon. It features a teenage girl living on a new terraforming settlement on a planet with signs of earlier, unknown habitation. Working with her mother in a recycling plant, she suffers seizures after exposure to some mysterious slag with high-density compounds. Although her mother and doctor dismiss some of the neurological side effects as hallucinations, Iris believes a mysterious being is reaching out to her. He becomes a little more human each day, as she becomes a little more of whatever he is.

Triggers: Mild profanity, themes those with schizophrenia should not take seriously.

INTROGRESSION TREE:

A dual-POV political twisty science romantasy standalone in the same universe as Red Demon. While I hope this might overlap with hard SFF tastes too, we'll see.

Introgression Tree follows the introverted Touhen, the pardoned son of the the infamous rebellion leaders. Too young to die alongside his parents or understand the politics, he's grown up content to seed and harvest his fields in his rural holding. However, no one has told him that this is a fantasy book — and therefore — his government is evil.* When the empire offers Touhen a chance to redeem his family name through a political marriage, he believes it is a mistake, not a conspiracy.

Born in a Chaeten academy where “family” is a borrowed word and marriage a temporary contract, Tsorei is efficient, politically brilliant, and the palace's top spies. Although she risks helping Touhen navigate his way out of an entrapment attempt, it is only because she has her own plans for him...

*One of y'all should do a twist where the fantasy government turns out to be faithfully serving the people all along. Our MC has been brainwashed and must confront all the terrible things they've done in the name of the greater good. I'm not gonna write that though. I got about ten books already in this aging brain  and getting dumber by the day. If you are one of the few people taking time to read this deep into an author's website, you deserve a little gift. Your idea now.

Themes include: Grief and loss, redemption, enemies to lovers romance, forced proximity, opposites attract.

Target Release Date:  Feb 2026

Any Mind Broken (Red Demon Sequel)

There will be a sequel—and a substantial part of it is already written. But I should warn you now: it won’t be a traditional sequel.
One of the great things about being an indie writer? No publisher owns the rights to my universe. No one can force the story into a standard duology or trilogy—or worse, tell me I’m not allowed to write more books set in Nara Mnaet after selling them the rights.

I love unpredictable structures that still make sense. I give you pieces that feel just connected enough to stay grounded, but never let you fully settle in or predict what happens next. By the end, no pieces are missing, and none are extraneous. I want my books to be re-readable—layered with details you’ll skip over on the first pass but catch the second time through.

The next two books in the Oria series will center *mostly* on new POV characters, but don't worry, familiar faces will stay woven into the story and be part of the greater narrative. Books four and five will tie off that overarching story. I’ve got it mapped out. I’m not going to Season 8 Game of Thrones this.

I’ll stay as vague as possible here—other than to say: yes, you will see surviving characters from Red Demon again.

Anyway.

Any Mind Broken is set during the same historical period as Introgression Tree. Dama, a woman of mixed Chaeten and Asri heritage with a rare magical gift she is uncomfortable using. Dama tries to be the change she wishes to see in the world by shielding her constituents from a corrupt government. But when that government drafts her magically gifted toddler, Dama is forced to reach out to her estranged mentor, Shri.

She never expected to see the man who raised her again. But Shri—now the leader of the Disciples of Reic—believes this might be his second chance to make things right.

I won’t spoil which POV characters fold back into the plot… but I will provide silly fake spoilers upon request.

Themes: Grief and loss, redemption, memory neuroscience (and why forgetting can be a mental health advantage), and how your favorite popular public figure is probably a terrible parent.
Target Release: Fall 2026

ABOUT STILL

About Sill

Sill (right) is a parent, sword afficionado, data analyst and suburban chicken farmer from Maryland. Many of their stories come from vivid dreams with fight scenes and recurring characters. After over twenty years of my brain haunting them, writing is now a primary priority in their life.

They love mature approachable prose, witty dialog and twisty enemies-to-lovers subplots. Expect complex characters, emotional devastation, and (eventually) hopeful themes. Their world building geeks out into neuroscience, genetics, psychology, and mycology.
